Bear Roots Farm has two certified organic, diversified vegetable farms in central Vermont– one in Williamstown and the other in South Barre. In 2019, they opened their farm store at The Roots Farm Market in Middlesex, just a stone’s throw away from VFA. Oh happy day! Farmers Jon Wagner, Karin Bellemare and their amazing farming and retail teammates have been crucial to my fermentation adventure from the beginning. They have been farming year-round in Vermont since 2013. I was lucky to meet Jon at a little winter farmers’ market in Waitsfield, just as we were both getting started. Pretty much since then, they have been supplying VFA with cabbages, root vegetables, cucumbers, onions and herbs. In addition to their great produce for fermenting, our family has enjoyed the fabulous Bear Roots Farm CSA for several years. They grow a wide range of crops including winter greens, heirloom tomatoes, root vegetables, perennial vegetables and summer berries.
